1. General Information

Department of Islamic History and Arts Master of Arts Program

There are more than twenty optional and obligatory courses in the department. This department deals with history of Muslims, their works in the fields of art and literature, their relations with different states and cultures starting from the environment and the period that Islam emerged in coming to today.

Eskişehir is one of the oldest Muslim Turkish cities. Muslims have been living here since around 1000 AD when the Turks came to Anatolia. As a result of this, lots of works which can reflect our historic and cultural heritage can be found in the city centre and its surroundings since the Seljukis.

Department of Islamic History and Art is trying to contribute the introduction and conservation of general Islamic history together with the general methodology of history, history of our region and its cultural relics. In this sense, the program consists of Sources and Methodology of Islamic History, Siyer and Modern Research on Siyer, Period on Hulefa-I Raşidin, Seljuki Political History and Institutions, Research Methods in Social Sciences, Turks and Their Activity in Islamic History, Paleography-Epigraphy, History of North Africa and Andalusia, History of Islamic Science, Seminar and preparation of thesis. Through these courses and the thesis, it is aimed to make students gain expertise on Islamic history, art and civilization.

 

2. Degree Awarded

Students those successfully completes the program are being given the certificate of master of arts in Islamic History and Arts.

4. Conditions for Admission and Enrollment

General admission criteria is valid for Turkish and foreign students to start the program.

In addition, students who hold undergraduate degrees from the university departments of Divinity, DAKB Education, History and Literature and those who have a background in Ottoman and Arabic Language ( those who took Ottoman and Arabic Language lessons)are being accepted to the program.

 

5. Recognition of the Prior Education

Recognition of the previous formal education from Turkish Higher Education institutions, vertical, horizontal and within university transfers have been carried out within the framework of “the regulation on the principles of the transfer between undergraduate level programs double major, minor and credit transfer between institutions” as determined by the Board of Higher Education.

Departments of divinity, DAKB education, history, literature and undergraduate education with Ottoman and Arabic language education.

 

6. Rules and Provisions for Qualification

It is required that the student has successfully completed all courses without having FF, DZ or YZ grades. In this program, it is required that the student has minimum 120 ECTS credits and cumulative GPA to be at least 2,00 out of 4,00.

 

7. Program Profile (Its Goals)

To teach qualified historians of Islam who has knowledge on the basic issues related to Islamic History and Arts, who uses scientific data in utmost level, who knows the ways to reach information, who questions, who can apply his/her knowledge and skills to the fields of Islamic history and arts, who understands the need of the country in the fields of culture and arts and the importance of these field, and finally who has scientific ethics,

To give importance to university-society cooperation, to provide solutions to society’s problems, to conduct research on national and international level through sharing knowledge and experience with all segments of the people,

To be able to apply knowledge, experience and skills gained by the program to work life and all areas of human interaction,

To teach historians of Islam who is keen to teamwork, who is participative, who understands the importance of the country’s history, cultural heritage and resources, and who has professional ethics.

 

8. Program Outcomes

1) Understanding of methodology and philosophy of general history,

2) Expertise in at least one of subjects of the sub-segments of the department of Islamic History and Arts,

3) Ability to explain and provide solutions for various problems he/she encountered or observed in society by using historical data,

4) Ability to prepare, conduct and finalize projects related to his/her area of expertise

5) Ability to constantly improve his/herself by following scientific development in his/her field and ability to use computer and informatics technologies,

6) Having professional and ethical responsibility, being sensitive toward values of society and environment and being aware of our heritage belonging to our historical and cultural roots,

7) Having a facility with scientific studies by his/herself and with a group, and having effective communicative skills in terms of professional and social aspects.

 

9. Employment Opportunities for Graduates

The graduates can find jobs as assistant, lecturer in related faculties of universities, as teacher in Ministry of National Education, and some posts in the Directorate of Religious Affairs       

 

10. Passing to Upper Level Programs

Candidates who have successfully completed MA program with the condition of having adequate marks from ALES or equivalent exams and knowing foreign language on an adequate level, can study PhD programs in History and Religious Studies in addition to their own field.

15. Department/Program Facilities

In Islamic History and Arts department, there are two Asst. Profs and a department secretary. Academic staffs from the Faculty of Divinity and the Faculty of Science and Literature also contribute to program.

In the faculty, there three classes and a meeting room for the MA program. Also, there are 14 classes, a conference room, two amphitheaters and technical materials like projector, computer and smart board in the faculty to be used when required.
