1. General Information

Department of Medical Biology was established under head of Associate Prof. Dr. Ayşe BAŞARAN according to rules of "Academic Organization Regulations at Universities" ,grounded to 2547 law, which was published at date of 18th February of 1982 with number of 17609 governmental newspaper and also was confirmed and come into validity by Presidency of Anadolu University at 24.12.1982 in the list of Anadolu University Medical School Department and Discipline.

When Medical School under the rule of Anadolu University was joined to a newly established Osmangazi University on 18.08.1993 according to 496 numbered decree laws, Medical Biology Department has been also part of Osmangazi University.

Since 1992, Medical Biology Department has given Medical Biology lectures at Medical School and Faculty of Dentistry, Master and Ph. D. (Doctor of Philosophy) courses in Institute of Medical Sciences, Medical Biology and Experimental Animals and Care course courses at Medical Laboratory and Radiology division in Eskisehir School of Health Services.

There are Experimental Animal, Cell Culture and Molecular Biology Research Laboratories belonging to Medical Biology Department. By applying DNA-RNA analysis at gene level, Protein determination methods, metabolism and chromatographic methods (paper, thin layer, liquid), researches at field of molecular biology, molecular genetics, molecular diagnostic, biotechnology and cancer biology are studied in these laboratories.

 

2. Qualification

Department of Medical Biology Master and/or Ph.D. diploma is given to students who successfully complete a degree of M.Sc. and/or Ph.D programs.

4. Admission and Enrollment Terms

General admission and enrollment terms declared by Institute of Medical Sciences are eligible for Turkish and foreign students.

 

5. Recognition of Former Education

In Turkish Higher Education institutions, recognition of prior learning, vertical, horizontal and in-house transfers take place in the scope of “UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS AND HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS SWITCH BETWEEN PROGRAMMES, DOUBLE MAJOR, MINOR AND MAKING TRANSFER BETWEEN CREDIT INSTITUTIONS BASIS OF REGULATION” which is determined by The Council of Higher Education.

 

6. Competency Requirements and Terms

The students have to pass successfully all of the courses in the program and must not have any FF, DZ or YZ grades.  Student should have minimum 21 ECTS in M.Sc. program, and 24 in Ph.D. program and grade points average (gpa) has to be minimum 3 over 4.

 

7. Objectives of the Program

Educational objectives of M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in Medical Biology are:

 

• Acquisition of experiences as practices and theoretical information in Medical Biology, Molecular Biology and Genetics.
• To provide creative, researcher in our field, voluntary to stand leader mission and responsible individuals.
• To grow up individuals who are able to guide society in his profession, create new ideas, defend their ideas in front of society, appreciate and take into act the importance of lifelong learning.

 

8. Program Competencies (Learning Outcomes)

Basic Science: To provide basic and competence information in medical and molecular biology.

Laboratory Techniques: Ability to choose and use of modern techniques and tools required for molecular biology researches and effectively utilization of scientific technologies

Test and Analysis: Ability of designing experiment, performing experiment, acquisition of data, analysis and interpretation of results.

Group Studies: To be able to work as a member of inter and intra discipline groups.

Communication Skills: To develop effective communication skills as oral and inscriptive in Turkish and usage/improving of foreign language (English)

Lifelong Learning: Ability of to be able to access information, to follow up developments in science and technology and improve oneself always

Ethics: Consciousness of profession and ethic responsibility

 

9. Employment Opportunities of Graduates

Our graduates have employment opportunities in their relevant field of public enterprises and universities. Existence of our graduates having positions in academic staff as professors, associate professors, assistant professors, and lecturers in various universities, also there are variety of employment opportunities in hospitals, laboratories and private sector.

 

10. Progression to High Degree Programs

Students who have master’s degree can study at their own doctorate program or any related fields in condition with having sufficient point from Academic personnel and postgraduate education entrance exam (ALES) and knowledge of foreign language.

Upon successful completion of doctorate program, candidates can have academic carrier studies and get high positions. They can be assigned as a manager in related organization and establishments.
