Physics Department

1. General Information

Physics departmentlaunched its education program at Anadolu University in 1982. Osmangazi University is established by law in 1993, participated in conformity with the law.

There are 5 professors, 6 associate professors, 12 assistant professors, in total, 23 faculty members, 6 research assistants PhD., 3 research assistants and 3 administrative personnel are employed in the department. The faculty members continue to work in the field of general physics, atomic and molecular physics, nuclear physics, solid state physics and high energy and plasma physics.  In the physics department, there are 4 student laboratories and 16 research laboratories. 

Graduate students (MSc and PhD)use their research labs to conduct studies related to their dissertations. In addition to teach introductory physics lectures (Physics I, Physics II) and physics related classes at other departments of our university, the faculty membersare involved in national and international projects, and they are conducted Master's and Doctoral programs.

Students with sufficient grade point average are eligible to apply for “double major” and “second major” programs at the associated departments. In addition, our students can take courses from national and foreign universities via “Erasmus”, “Farabi” and “Mevlana” student/faculty exchange programs during their education. Our department encourages undergraduate students to participate in the summer internship program in the pre-arranged institutions.

Our alumni are employed in government institutions and private sector as faculty member, researcher, research and development specialist, teacher in state and private schools (if they complete a year and half long graduate collage program). In addition, our alumni work as computer programmer and occupational health and safety specialist (after completion of a certificate program). Recently, they are also employed as instructors in school of health services programs such as opticianry, medical imaging technologies.     

 

2. Qualification

The students who have accomplished the program will have a Bachelor’s degree in physics field.

 

3. Level of Qualification

Undergraduate.

 

4. Admission and Enrollment Terms

General admission and enrollment terms are eligible for Turkish and foreign students.

 

5. Recognition of Former Education

In Turkish Higher Education Institutions, recognition of former formal education, vertical and lateral transfer and transfer between departments in the university is fulfilled within the scope of YÖK (YüksekÖğretimKurulu) regulations, namely “The transfer between associate degrees and undergraduate degrees, double major, lateral branch and inter-institutional credit transfer regulations in the Higher Education Institutions”. At the beginning of the each period, exemption exams for language and computer sciences courses can be taken. Students who can pass the exam will be exempted from the mentioned courses.

 

6. Competency Requirements and Terms

The students have to pass all of the courses in the program and must not have any FF, DZ or YZ grades. In this program, the students should have minimum 240 ECTS and grade points average (GPA) have to be minimum 2 over 4.

 

7. Objectives of the Program

To raise physicists who have the ethics of basic sciences and having understood the importance of country’s natural sources.  These also will have high caliber knowledge of physics and apply them into physics and technological fields by interrogating the related problems.

Industry-University cooperation will be the first item in order to solve industrial problems related to basic sciences. To make national and international research works in order to achieve these goals.

To be able to apply all the processes of physical research both theoretical and experimentally in the daily life of citizens.

To train physicist who have the sense of ethics and also know the importance of country’s natural sources and also being team workable and responsible.

 

8. Program Competencies (Learning Outcomes)

Having sufficient knowledge about mathematics, physics and the skill of applying for modelling and solving of physics problems by the theoretical and experiential informations  about these areas.

Skill of defining, identifying, formulating and solving by selecting and applying appropriate analysis and modelling method for the complex physics problems about physics and related areas.

Skill of design a complex system, device or product by applying the modern design methods under realistic constraints and conditions according to a specified objective.

Skill of the effective usage of information technology, selection, development and usage of the modern techniques and tools which are necessary for the application of physics.

An ability of designing of the experiment, experimentation, collecting data, analyzing and interpreting the results for the investigation of problems of the chemical engineering.

An ability of having disciplinary and interdisciplinary teamwork and ability of individual working.

An awareness of the necessity of life-long learning; accessing to the information, following the scientific and technological developments and ability of renew oneself continuously.

Ethical and professional responsibility.

Knowledge about project management, risk management and change management and an awareness about sustainable development, innovativeness, entrepreneurship.

The knowledge about the effects of physics practices socially and globally which are related to health, environment and security; awareness about the legal results of physical solutions and national and international legal regulation and the standards.

To have knowledge about the modern problems that are local and global.

 

9. Careers

10. Further Study

The department offers a various research opportunities leading to master and PhD degrees for the students who are successfully graduated from undergraduate program have sufficient grade of foreign language and ALES (or equivalent exams) grades.
