Polymer Science and Technology (MSc)

1. General Information

The Department of Polymer Science and Technology (PST) is a postgraduate program which offers master of Science (MSc) and doctorate education. It was founded in 2012 as an Interdisciplinary Programme and continues its education with eleven academic staff and a research assistant. The aim of the program is to provide students with theoretical and practical knowledge of polymers in an interdisciplinary environment. The aim of the course is to train the equipped polymer scientists demanded by the industry and to enable them to conduct research at the international level in universities.Polymer Science and Technology, which is one of the fastest growing materials science and technology, is a widely accepted research field which is accepted all over the world. Polymer is a common field of study of physics, chemistry, biology basic sciences and medical and engineering disciplines. Materials and tools used in our daily life are 75-80% polymer / plastic based materials. In addition, polymeric nanomaterials / nanoparticles are at the top of the list in the field of nanotechnology which is one of the popular areas of today. Due to their superior properties and low costs, the polymers have been used more frequently in daily life (more preferred in glass, metal and ceramic based products). The first commercial polymer (1907) is celluloid thermoplastic. In the 1930s, polymers such as nylon, teflon, polystyrene and polyethylene were added to the polymer family. As a science field, PST requires interdisciplinary collaboration. Therefore, there is a need to specialize in the field of PST for individuals with different levels of education at the undergraduate level. The common point of these programs is to educate graduates of different departments and to provide them with complementary courses.

9. Graduates Employment Opportunities

As in most countries, the production of polymer science in the largest scale is on plastics. In 2017, a total of 9.6 million tons of plastic products produced in which a total of 3.8 million tons of plastic packaging materials are the leader part. The plastic packaging materials were followed by plastic construction materials with more than 2.1 milion tons. The total content of plastic raw materials produced in Turkey-2017: 31% LDPE, HDPE 9%, 15% PVC, PP, 12%, 10% PS, PETDER at 23%.Within the framework of its 2023 export vision, at least 17 billion dollars of export target targeted for the chemical sector is realized with plastic / polymer sector. Although it may seem quite difficult to achieve this goal, it is possible to approach the target if it is aimed at the production of both raw materials and high-strength polymers (such as strategic high engineering polymers). In this context, it is seen that the plastics sector, in which our graduate students can work competently, is a very big sector.
