Master's Degree Program in Philosophy And Religious Studies

1. General Information

The Department of Philosophy and Religious Sciences has chosen the different ideas that emerged throughout the history of thought, the changes that these ideas have brought about in today's people and society, and the debates on this subject as the field of research within the fields of history of philosophy, Islamic philosophy, philosophy of religion, logic, religious education, sociology of religion, psychology of religion and history of religions. It aims not only to analyze the intellectual heritage of history, but also to investigate contemporary intellectual movements.

2. Degree Awarded

Students who successfully complete the program and meet the program qualifications will have a master’s degree in philosophy and religious Studies.

4. Admission and Registration Requirements

Undergraduate diploma; Having the required score from the graduate entrance exam (ALES); Having sufficient foreign language skills (YDS, YÖKDİL, IELTS, TOEFL); For foreign students (except those studying in Turkey): TÖMER certificate indicating that they know Turkish at C1 level; Successfully passing the Oral Science Examination (Interview).

5. Recognition of Prior Learning

Newly enrolled students must apply to the Graduate School with the approval of the department and advisor within the first four weeks of the semester they enroll in order to count the courses they have taken and succeeded in their previous education or as special students. For course counting, students must apply to the head of the relevant department with a petition stating the courses they want to count and with a transcript and approved documents covering the course content. Course counting is finalized with the decision of the institute board of directors.

6. Qualification Requirements and Rules

It is required to take at least 27 credits from the courses available in the Master's program and a Seminar course; to provide a minimum of 120 ECTS credits, not to have a grade of FF, DZ or YZ, to successfully complete all the courses taken, to have a GPA of at least 3.00 out of 4.00, and to successfully defend the thesis prepared in the field in front of a selected jury. Students who meet these requirements are awarded a master’s degree in philosophy and religious Studies.

7. Program Profile (Objective)

It aims to gain a scientific perspective in the field of Philosophy and Religious Studies, to produce academic knowledge in related disciplines, to share the knowledge produced in national and international scientific circles, and to encourage critical thinking, intellectual curiosity, open-mindedness, and a deep understanding of themselves, others, and the world in which they live.

8. Program Qualifications (Learning Outcomes)

- Students will acquire the ability to interpret, explain and compare religious phenomena in a variety of historical, social and cultural contexts.

- Students will learn about the different theories and major debates among scholars in various academic fields (e.g. religious studies, philosophy, psychology and sociology) on the nature and meaning of religion

- Students will be able to analyze and interpret the intersections of religion with other cultural dimensions such as science, politics, ethics, education, art and popular culture.

- Students will be able to critically analyze important questions and problems of the intellectual accumulation of the religious tradition.

- Students will gain knowledge and insight into the basic concepts and methods of philosophy, social sciences and psychology to clarify and explain the phenomenon of religion.

- Students will have an introductory knowledge of the major figures and philosophical approaches that constitute the history of Islamic philosophy and their interrelationships and interactions with other religious studies.

- Students will be able to develop an understanding of how philosophy and religion can contribute to concerns in other disciplines and in everyday life.

- Students will acquire and develop critical thinking and critical reading skills in oral and written expression by learning to identify, analyze and understand arguments.

- Students will be able to access and distinguish between primary and secondary sources in the relevant field; use collections, articles, biographies and web resources appropriate to their research topic; critically read and adapt these sources to their work in order to strengthen their research and research reports; and communicate these sources accurately in oral and written expression.

- Students will be able to specialize in an interdisciplinary field while learning about the elements and forms of religious life, such as beliefs, rituals, symbols, institutions, oral and written narratives, ethical systems, communities, practices and material cultural objects.

- Students will create an independent research project by producing an original, valid and meaningful thesis and will be able to work with appropriate sources to support their arguments.

 

9. Occupational Profiles of Graduates

Graduates of the Philosophy and Religious Studies Master's program can fulfill their duties in the field of education and religious services in a more equipped manner, as well as find the opportunity to work as Research Assistants and Lecturers in faculties such as Faculties of Theology, Arts and Sciences, Education, Social and Humanities.

10. Access to Higher Degree Programs

Those who successfully complete their master's degree are eligible to enter the PhD program of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Sciences if they complete the necessary requirements.

11. Exams, Assessment and Evaluation

Attendance is compulsory in graduate programs. Students whose attendance rate is below seventy percent in theoretical courses and below eighty percent in applied courses cannot take the final exam of the relevant course and are considered unsuccessful. They repeat the failed courses. The success level of the student is measured by the studies and / or midterm exams to be held during the semester and the final studies and / or exams at the end of the semester. For each course, the proportions of the studies and midterm exams during the semester and the final exam to be included in the success grade are determined by the faculty member at the beginning of the semester and announced in the student information system. Except for the specialization course, seminar course and thesis studies, the rates determined for the midterm and final evaluations of the other courses cannot be less than 40% for each. In distance education, this rate is regulated according to the relevant legislation. The success grade for each course is calculated over 100 points and letter grades are determined according to the table below.

The Department of Philosophy and Religious Sciences has 4 Professors, 3 Associate Professors, 3 Assistant Professors and 4 Research Assistants. The department uses the Faculty of Theology Meeting Hall and ESOGU Institute of Social Sciences Meeting Hall and Seminar Rooms for meetings and seminars.
