Department of Biostatistics and Medical Informatics

 

1. General Information

The Department of Biostatistics has been established in the Department of Medical Biology in Anadolu University Medical Faculty in 1983 before ESOGU was established. It was reorganised under ESOGU Medical Faculty  Department of Basic Sciences in 1993.

The department has been giving licence and graduate courses to different faculities and vocational schools  since the day it was established. Also, It organised conferences, seminars and courses about Scientific Research Methods at different medical faculities and schools of physical education and sports.

There are  master and doctorate programmes of Biostatistic in Institute of Medical Sciences. The Department has given 15 master and 12 doctorate diplomates till now. Most of these graduates has been workin as academik members or researchers at universities.

There are 3 internet connected computer laboratories in our department.Not only application of theorical courses, but also scientific researchs are being done in these laboratories.

There are 1 Professor, 3 Associate Professors, 2 Assistant Professors and 4 Research Assistans in our department. Raising graduates  who can work at the  planning, conducting, analysing ,interpretation and publishing parts of a  medical research  is the most important aim of our department.

The students who completed master and doctorate programmes successfully are given master and doctorate diplomates.

4. Acceptance and Register Conditions

For registering the master programme, the candidate must have at least 55 points from ALES exam and 40 points from YDS. For registering the doctorate programme,if the candidate has a master degree , he must have at least 55 points from ALES exam and 55 points from YDS but if the candidate just have a bachelor’s degree, he must have at least 80 points from ALES exam ,55 points from YDS and minimum GPA of 3.00/4.00 .

5. Recognition of Prior Learning

In Turkish Higher Education institutions, recognition of prior learning, vertical, horizantal and in-house transfers take place in the scope of “UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS AND HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS SWITCH BETWEEN PROGRAMMES, DOUBLE MAJOR, MINOR AND MAKING TRANSFER BETWEEN CREDIT INSTITUTIONS BASIS OF REGULATION” which is determined by The Council of Higher Education

6. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Master’s programme consists of at least7 courses on condition that can’t be less than totally 21 credits for bachelor’s degree students,one seminary course,  proficiency exam, thesis proposal, specialized field course, and thesis study.  Proficiency exam, thesis proposal, specialized field course, and thesis study have no credits and evaluated as successful/unsuccessful.

At the end of 3 years, the students, who can’t complete courses with credits or don’t have minimum GPA of 3.00/4.00, should notify in written to Head of Department if they will continue or not. The students who want to continue are made to have new courses except the ones higher than BB to get enough GPA. However the student can’t benefit from studentship rights except attending courses and exams and preparing thesis.

Doctorate programme consists of at least 8 courses on condition that can’t be less than totally 24 credits for master graduated students, proficiency exam, thesis proposal, specialized field course, and thesis study.  For the students who are accepted with bachelor degree, programme consists of at least 16 courses on condition that can’t be less than totally 48 credits, proficiency exam, thesis proposal, specialized field course, and thesis study.  Proficiency exam, thesis proposal, specialized field course, and thesis study have no credits and evaluated as successful/unsuccessful.

For the doctorate programme maximum time to complete required courses successfully is 2 years for the master graduated students and 3 years for graduated students. The students, who can’t complete courses with credits or don’t have minimum GPA of 3.00/4.00, should notify in written to Head of Department if they will continue or not. A new advisor can be assigned to the student who wants to continue to the programme.

Proficiency exam, is examination of if the student has sufficient knowledge about the essential topics and doctorate study, after the student has completed the courses succesfully with a GPA of 3.00/4.00.

Doctorate proficiency exam is done in two parts as written and verbal. The average of written and verbal exam results should be at least 75/100.The Committee of doctorate proficiency decide with assesing advices of the examination jury and written and verbal exam results, if the student is successful or not with absolute majority. This decision is notified with an official report to the institute by Head of the Department within 3 days after the proficiency exam.

7. Aim of the Programme

The aim of this programme is to make students of medical and other health sciences ,and every health personnel  understand the importance of biostatistics at scientific research and qualified service presentation , have vision at a certain level about biostatistics.

8. Programme Outcomes

  • The advanced level of scientific knowledge and skills will be gained to the students  in the fields of Biostatistics
  • Point of investigative and critical view, the ability to asses health issues multi-directionally will be gained
  • The ability to apply diagnostic procedures and survey methods with latest technological and scientific approaches will be gained
  • The ability of working at the  planning, conducting, analysing ,interpretation and publishing parts of a  medical research   will be gained.

9. Occupational Profiles of Graduates

Our graduates have employment oppurtunities in their relevant field of public enterprises and universities. Existence of our graduates having positions in academic staff as professors, associate professors,  assistant professors, and lecturers in various universities, also there are variety of employment opportunities in hospitals, laboratories and private sector at analysing and reporting .

10. Access to Further Studies

Students who have master’s degree can study at their own doctorate programme or any releated fields in condition with having sufficient point from  Academic personnel and postgraduate education entrance exam (ALES) and knowledge of  foreign language.

Upon succesful completion of doctorate programme , candidates can have academic carrier studies and get high positions. They can be assigned as a manager in related organization and establishments.

There are technical equipments and documentaries that can enable students to do advanced research during master and doctorate programme.

   In Department of Biostatistics and Medical Informatics,  there are 3 computer laboratories with   computers connected to the internet  that have package programmes for analyzing data, preparing projects, writing thesis,  articles and research reports.
