Medical Genetics

1. General Information

Medical genetics is the specialty of medicine that involves the diagnosis and management of hereditary disorders and genetics-based diseases. The Medical Genetics Department was founded in 1982 under the Department of Medical Biology. The Medical Genetics under the Medical Biology Department was closed down by the YOK decision in 2002, all academic members and along with the present laboratories were transferred into the new Medical Genetics Department. Since then, the department offers MSc and PhD educations extensively.

The researches related with prenatal/postnatal cytogenetics, molecular genetics, cancer genetics and neurogenetics have been performed in the department. Array technology in detection of genomic copy aberrations in congenital malformations and different genetic-based diseases have been used by researchers. The postgraduate students have independent study possibilities in the department and they take responsibilities in diagnostic studies.

2. Qualification

Master and doctorate diplomas are given to students who successfully completed PhD and master education in Medical Genetics Department.

3. Level of Qualification

Master Degree (2nd Level) and PhD (3rd Level)

4. Admission and Enrollment Terms

Application should include the following:

  • Scores from a foreign language test: ÜDS or TOEFL or IELTS.
  • Scores from Academic Staff and Graduate Study Education Exam (ALES)
  • For applying to thMaster Degree in Medical Genetics, Bachelor’s degree in Biology / Molecular Biology and Genetics Departments of the Faculties of Sciences and Arts is required.
  • For applying to PhD program Master Degree in Medical Genetics or M.D. degree is required.

5. Ecognition of Former Education

•   To complete  Biology /Molecular Biology and Genetics /Genetics Departments of the Faculties of Sciences and Arts is the first requirement.

•    Students with insufficient background in Medical Genetics, course requirement may be modified and are encouraged to take the scientific background course during their first year.

•    Students who are currently enrolled in a PhD Degree Program in Medical Genetics at another institution may transfer to the PhD Program at ESOGU. The admission committee thoroughly evaluates all aspects of each application, including performance in previous graduate program. There is no single deciding factor in determining admission and all interested students are encouraged to apply.

6. Competency Requirements and Terms

All graduate students must follow the rules and regulations of the Health Science Institute as outlined in the Standards and Degree Requirements section of the guidelines of Eskişehir Osmangazi University.

Master Degree requires 21 total credits of course work, a seminar course and a thesis. All courses must be completed with a grade of CC or higher. In the first year, students will participate in the core curriculum as well as have the opportunity to select elective courses focused on area-specific interests. At end of the first year, students select a degree advisor and begin their thesis research. The master program anticipates completion of formal studies in two years.

PhD Degree requires 24 total credits of course work, and a thesis. The students should also complete each section studies during their rotations in the Department. All courses must be completed with a grade of CB or higher. The Medical Genetics program anticipates completion of formal course studies in the first two years. For advancement to candidacy for the Ph.D. degree in Medical Genetics, it is normally necessary for the student to fulfill the following requirements: (1) pass language examination; (2) pass qualifying exams in general Medical Genetics and (3) submit and defend an original research proposal.

7. Objectives of the Program

The primary objective of the Medical Genetics Program is to prepare researchers with diverse backgrounds for independent research careers in the concepts and methods of medical genetics.

8. Program Competencies (Learning Outcomes)

The ability to

  • Offering  solutions and solving problems related with medical genetics and consideration of results
  • Taking responsibility related with diagnostic test and evaluation of results.
  • Carrying out the medical genetics related studies independently or associated with a team, writing scientific articles and presentation of the results in different scientific meetings
  • Performing scientific evaluations in priority issues of Medical genetics area.
  • Bringing medical genetics related areas together in problem solving.

9. Occupational Profiles of Graduates

Students graduated from our programs with the Ph.D. or M.D/Ph.D. degree go on to careers in research and teaching in national/international universities.

Students graduated from our programs with the Ph.D. or M.D/Ph.D. can find possibilities in State/private genetics diagnostic centers.

10. Access to Further Studies

Graduates who successfully completed the Master's Degree may apply to doctorate (third cycle) program in Medical Genetics.

11. Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Students have to take a mid-term and a final examination and/or complete a project for course evaluation. To pass any course, student must receive at least 70 out of 100.

12. Graduation Requirements

Graduation requirements are explained in “Qualification Requirements and Regulations” section.

13. Manner of Study (Full-Time, Part-Time, E-Learning )

Full-Time and active participation in laboratory based studies.
