Medicine

1. General Information

Eskişehir Osmangazi University, Faculty of Medicine was established in 1970 and accepts nearly 200 new students every year. The education period is six years and the programme is annual. The education language is Turkish.

The main objective of Eskişehir Osmangazi University, Faculty of Medicine is to graduate erudite medical doctors having the scientific notion, learned the ways to access to scientific knowledge and how to use it, to conduct medical research independently, to perform their profession with not only evidence-based but also ethical approach, sensitive to the local, national and universal health issues.

Eskişehir Osmangazi University, Faculty of Medicine aims to achieve the three main missions of a medical faculty, i.e. medical education, health service and scientific research concomitantly and in accordance.

Eskişehir Osmangazi Üniversitesi Medical Faculty is academically assigned into three major sections; Basic Medical Sciences, Surgical Sciences, and Medical Sciences. Each section is composed of related departments and divisions. Medical education is coordinated by undergraduate and postgraduate educational units.

 

2. Qualification Awarded

The degree of Medical Doctor is awarded to students upon successful completion of all required exams and practicals in the curriculum.

4. Admission and Enrollment Terms

High School Diploma and placement through a centralized national university placement examination arranged by OSYM (Higher Education Council Student Selection and Placement Center) are required to admit the Faculty of Medicine.

 

5. Recognition of Former Education

Recognition of prior learning is at the beginning stage in the Turkish Higher Education System. In Turkish Higher Education Institutions, recognition of former formal education is fulfilled within in the scope of YÖK (Yüksek Öğretim Kurulu-Higher Education Consoul) regulations, namely “The transfer between associate degrees and undergraduate degrees, double major, lateral branch and interinstitutional credit transfer regulations in the Higher Education Institutions”.

University and hence the Faculty of Medicine is no exception to this. However, exams of exemption are organised at the start of each term at the University for courses compulsory in the curriculum, such as Foreign Languages. The students who have completed the learning process for these courses on his/her own or through other means, and believe that they have achieved the learning outcomes specified are given the right to take the exemption exam. The students who achieve a passing grade from these exams are held exempt from the related course in the curriculum, and this grade is entered into the transcript of the student.

 

6. Competency Requirements and Terms

The education period is six years in the Faculty of Medicine. The students have to pass all of the courses in the program. The achievement of a total of 360 ECTS credits and serve a 12 month rotating internship at last year is required for qualification as a medical doctor.

 

7. Objectives of the Program

Our medical education is arranged on the basis of coordination between horizontal and vertical integration of lecture titles and hours. This coordination is applied by Course Boards (Teaching Committees) in the years I.,2., 3., 4. and 5. In first three years,one  whole academic year is considered as a course. In the years IV. and V., each course board is a course. Vlth class, a -12-month period, covers the period of Internship. During this period, the success of students in the departments is based on more clinical, outpatient, laboratory and field studies and medical interventions done in person, and patient follow-up, comunication skills as well as contributions to attended seminars and meetings. The director of the relevant unit evaluated interns competency with a certificate and the result is converted to a grade.

 

8. Program Competencies (Learning Outcomes)

Knowledge: Explain normal structure and mechanisms of functioning body as a whole and of the systems, organs, tissue and cells.  Identify the alterations in tissues, organs and systems caused by the diseases.  Select evidence-based highly effective methods by interpreting critical thinking methods in order to solve case-based problems. Establish a proper and effective communication with the patients, patients' relatives and all health care personnel

Skills: Perform basic diagnostic methods to establish a diagnosis Plan and perform effective, safe, appropriate and low-cost therapies. Provide immediate treatments and basic life support. Follow ways of reaching the knowledge in order to response to scientific and technological advances, changes in professional practice.

Competency: As a privileged task of the physician to improve the patient's life and health, adopt the principles like taking preventive measures, employing proper and rational treatment options. Regard universal medical ethics principles like "primum non nocere". Take the responsibility of providing first aid to emergencies. Evaluate each patient's own environment, community and individual requirements. Unbiased and judicial approaches to patients and relatives, and adopt that as an ethical obligation. Respect universal patients' rights, including privacy policy. Comprehend and adopt the importance of life-long education and self-learning.

 

9. Careers

The graduates of the Faculty of Medicine have many opportunities of employment in a varitey of state and private companies. The job opportunities for the graduates are immense. They are recruited as practitioners or they can get a job in private institutions. Moreover, they can specialize in any field after obtaining the required scores from Medical Specialization Examination (Its abreviation is TUS in Turkish).

 

10. Further Study

Graduates with the Medical Doctor degree may apply to Doctor of Philosophy programs in the basic medical sciences and Residency Training programs in the internal and surgical medical sciences.

 

11. Examination, Assessment and Grading Regulations

During the preclinical years (first three years), theoretical and practical examinations after each committee and final examination at the end of that academic year must be taken and passed in order to continue to the next term. In the preclinical years, passing score of that year is calculated by taking the sum of the 60% of the average of the committee scores and 40% of the final examination. The student must have a score of 60 out of 100 in order to pass that year. Each cours board at during the fourth and fifth years is accepted as one course. Practical and theoretical examinations are held after each course. The passing score of that independant course is 60 out of 100. At least a score of 60 must be taken both from the practical and the theoretical examination in order to pass that course. The score of that course is calculated as taking the average of the practical and theoretical examinations. In case of a lower score than 60 in the first examination, the score of that course is not calculated. During the sixth year, score of each course is assessed by evaluating the general medical accretion, task responsibility, communication skills, ability to prepare and follow the patient, psychosocial situation, ability to perform medical intervention and field working skills after the end of each internship of the relevant course.

 

12. Graduation Requirements

Successful completion of 360 ECTS credits for a six-year educational period is required for graduation. However, the graduates receive their diploma only after approval by the Ministry of Health following the completion of a two-year obligatory work for the government at a primary health care center.

15. Program Facilities

The faculty is composed of three departments, namely Basic Medical Sciences, Internal Medical Sciences and Surgical Medical Sciences.

Eight fully equipped main lecture halls with 150 student capacity and 8 small classrooms with 60 student capacity are located in the teaching hospital with more than 1100 bed capacity. Modern learning facilities of the faculty include clinical skills laboratories fully-equipped with manikins; integrated laboratories for a multidisciplinary interactive education; a computer laboratory with its 100 personal computers each connected to the local area network and internet; the library with main textbooks, more than 200 periodicals, access to the internet, electronic databases, and online journals; 24-hour open emergency services, several health centers outside the university serving as education and research districts for public health education.
