Physics Department

 1. General Information

 

    Our department started its academic journey at Anadolu University in 1982 and joined Osmangazi University in 1993. It continues to provide educational services under the umbrella of Osmangazi University.

 

    The Eskişehir Osmangazi University (ESOGÜ) Physics Bachelor's Program aims to provide students with in-depth knowledge, practices, and applications of physics. The program also aims to motivate students for advanced scientific progress and to train dynamic physicists with the ability to adapt to evolving scientific and technological developments.

 

    With a strong academic staff, national and international collaborations, innovative projects, and modern experimental systems, the ESOGÜ Physics Bachelor's Program has established itself as one of the leading physics programs among universities in Turkey since 1982. Under this infrastructure and expertise, various studies are conducted in the fields of condensed matter physics, high-energy and plasma physics, atomic physics, general physics, and nuclear physics.

 

    Our department's students have the option to attend an English preparatory school for one year if they wish. Throughout their education, students can graduate by completing a total of 240 ECTS credits, including elective courses alongside mandatory ones. Students with satisfactory overall grade averages can apply to our university's 'Double Major' and 'Minor' programs to obtain a second diploma or certificate in different departments.

 

    Graduates who successfully complete the Physics Bachelor's Program obtain the title of 'Physicist' and have various career opportunities. Our graduates:

 

  • Can work as teachers in secondary education by receiving pedagogical training.
  • Can pursue postgraduate education and become academicians serving in other fundamental and applied science fields.
  • Can work as 'Health Physicists' in nuclear medicine, diagnosis, and treatment after completing the necessary training.
  • Can work in the energy sector, including nuclear and renewable energy, which is of increasing importance for our country.
  • Have the opportunity to work in various areas of industry and in research and development laboratories.
  • Can serve as researchers and/or experts in public and similar private sector organizations such as the Turkish Atomic Energy Authority, the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey, the General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration, and the Institute of Machinery and Chemistry.
  • Can work in the field of occupational safety by obtaining certification from Occupational Safety Certificate programs.
  • Can be employed as specialists and/or technical personnel in various branches of industry, contributing to the need for qualified quality control measurement personnel in our country.
  • Have the opportunity to work in emerging employment areas parallel to advancements in science and technology, such as nanotechnology, information technologies, energy, and medical physics, with interdisciplinary collaboration.

 

2. Qualification

 

    The students who have accomplished the program will have a Bachelor’s degree in physics field.

 

3. Level of Qualification

 

    Undergraduate.

 

4. Admission and Enrollment Terms

 

    General admission and enrollment terms are eligible for Turkish and foreign students.

 

5. Recognition of Former Education

 

    In Turkish Higher Education Institutions, recognition of former formal education, vertical and lateral transfer and transfer between departments in the university is fulfilled within the scope of YÖK (YüksekÖğretimKurulu) regulations, namely “The transfer between associate degrees and undergraduate degrees, double major, lateral branch and inter-institutional credit transfer regulations in the Higher Education Institutions”. At the beginning of the each period, exemption exams for language and computer sciences courses can be taken. Students who can pass the exam will be exempted from the mentioned courses.

 

6. Competency Requirements and Terms

 

    The students have to pass all of the courses in the program and must not have any FF, DZ or YZ grades. In this program, the students should have minimum 240 ECTS and grade points average (GPA) have to be minimum 2.00 over 4.00.

 

7. Objectives of the Program

 

    To cultivate qualified physicists who are knowledgeable in Basic Sciences and Physics-related topics, capable of acquiring information at the highest level, questioning, applying their knowledge and skills in the field of Physics, understanding the significance of the country's natural resources, and possessing the ethics of basic sciences,

 

    To emphasize university-industry collaboration, address the industrial problems from the perspective of basic sciences, and conduct basic scientific research at the national and international levels by sharing knowledge and experience,

 

    To apply the theoretical and applied knowledge and experiences gained in Physics to both professional life and every step of the processes where physics is necessary,

 

    To train physicists who are inclined towards teamwork, collaborative, understand the importance of the country's natural resources, and adhere to professional ethics.

 

8. Program Competencies (Program Outcomes)

 

  • To correctly understand the fundamental concepts, laws, and relationships of physics.
  • To develop the ability to reason and solve problems based on physics concepts and laws.
  • To equip oneself with the necessary mathematical tools to examine theoretical and applied physics problems.
  • To acquire skills in designing experiments, conducting them, and evaluating the results both individually and as part of a team.
  • To solve physics problems using information technologies, develop numerical models.
  • To express the fundamental concepts and laws of physics in a clear and understandable manner.
  • To develop awareness of professional and ethical responsibilities.
  • To possess effective verbal and written communication skills in Turkish and the ability to use at least one foreign language related to the profession.
  • To embrace the importance of lifelong learning, follow current developments in interdisciplinary courses and scientific activities, and develop oneself.
  • To gain the ability to act independently, use initiative, and demonstrate creativity.

 

9. Careers

 

    Our alumni are employed in government institutions and private sector as faculty member, researcher, research and development specialist, teacher in state and private schools (if they complete a year and half long graduate collage program). In addition, our alumni work as computer programmer and occupational health and safety specialist (after completion of a certificate program). Recently, they are also employed as instructors in school of health services programs such as opticianry, medical imaging technologies.     

 

10. Further Study

 

    The department offers a various research opportunities leading to master and PhD degrees for the students who are successfully graduated from undergraduate program have sufficient grade of foreign language and ALES (or equivalent exams) grades.
