Biophysics Department

1. General Information

Biophysics is the application of physics to biological problems.  Biophysicists study life at every level, from atoms and molecules to cells, organisms, and environments.

The Biophysics Department was founded by Assoc.Prof.Dr. Halit YILDIRIM in 1981 at the Medical Faculty of Eskişehir Osmangazi University (ESOGU). ESOGU Biophysics is a research and education oriented department, and offers programs leading to M.Sc and Ph.D. Degrees in Biophysics. Program stresses laboratory training and original research performed under the direction of a faculty member.

2. Qualification

Master and doctorate diplomas are given to students who successfully completed PhD and master education in Biophysics Department.

3. Level of Qualification

Master Degree (2nd Level) and PhD (3rd Level)

4. Admission and Enrollment Terms

Application should include the following:

•                  Scores from a foreign language test: ÜDS or TOEFL or IELTS.

•                  Scores from Academic Staff and Graduate Study Education Exam (ALES) or Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT).

•                  For applying to the Master Degree in Biophysics Bachelor’s degree in Physics or in Biomedical Engineering is required.

•                  For applying to PhD program Master Degree in Biophysics or M.D. degree.

5. Recognition of Former Education

Students with insufficient background in Physics and/or Physiology, course requirement may be modifiedand are encouraged to take the scientific background course during their first year.

Students who are currently enrolled in a PhD Degree Program in Biophysics at another institution may transfer to the PhD Program at ESOGU. The admission committee thoroughly evaluates all aspects of each application, including performance in previous graduate program. There is no single deciding factor in determining admission and all interested students are encouraged to apply.

6. Competency Requirements and Terms

All graduate students must follow the rules and regulations of the Health Science Institute as outlined in the Standards and Degree Requirements section of the guidelines of Eskişehir Osmangazi University.

Master Degree requires 21 total credits of course work, a seminar course and a thesis. All courses must be completed with a grade of B or higher. In the first year, students will participate in the core curriculum as well as have the opportunity to select elective courses focused on area-specific interests. At end of the first year, students select a degree advisor and begin their thesis research. The master program anticipates completion of formal studies in two years.

PhD Degree requires 24 total credits of course work, and a thesis. All courses must be completed with a grade of B or higher. The biophysics program anticipates completion of formal course studies in the first two years. For advancement to candidacy for the Ph.D. degree in Biophysics, it is normally necessary for the student to fulfill the following requirements: (1) pass language examination; (2) pass qualifying exams in general Biophysics; and (3) submit and defend an original research proposal. As a rule, students will not be permitted to enter the third year of graduate study unless the above requirements have been fulfilled.

7. Objectives of the Program

The primary objective of the Biophysics Program is to prepare investigators with diverse backgrounds for independent research careers in which the concepts and methods of physical science are applied to biological problems.

8. Program Competencies (Learning Outcomes)

Theoretical and practical knowledge in mathematics, physics and biological sciences The ability to apply for modeling and solving biological problems

9. Occupational Profiles of Graduates

Students graduated from our programs with the Ph.D. or M.D/Ph.D. degree go on to careers in research and teaching.

10. Access to Further Studies

Graduates who successfully completed the Master's Degree may apply to doctorate (third cycle) program in Biophysics.

11. Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Students have to take a mid-term and a final examination and/or complete a project for course evaluation. To pass any course, student must receive at least 70 out of 100.

12. Graduation Requirements

Graduation requirements are explained in “Qualification Requirements and Regulations” section.
