Department of Histology and Embryology

  1. General Information

Our department was founded in the roof of Anadolu University Faculty of Medicine (now Eskişehir Osmangazi University-ESOGÜ) by Prof. Dr. A. Ergin AÇIKALIN in 1983.

  1. Qualification

Masters and Ph.D. diplomas are awarded to those who have successfully completed their masters and doctorate in Histology and Embryology Department.

  1. Level of Qualification

Master degree (2Level 2) and doctorate ( Level 3)

  1. Admission and Enrollment Terms

For turkish and foreign students,  general accepted conditions are appropriate to start programme. Provided that at least to take 55 from academic personnel and postgraduate education entrance exam performed by OSYM , it is needed to have UDS and graduate point average determined by senate. To be able to apply postgraduate programme,  % 25% of graduate/postgraduate point average,  50% of ALES and 25% of UDS is used.

 

  1. Recognition of Former Education

In accordance with the law 2547  by 6. law , master  education conducted in higher education institutions is regulated  with bylaw prepared by interuniversity council.

  1. Competency Requirements and Terms

Maximum 3 years(6 semesters) are allowed to complete a master degree. From the lessons available in graduate programmes of  the department  or other related departments the lessons, taking lessons minimum 24 credits  for pHd programmes(60 ECTS), and 1 seminar  lesson, and pass the lessons ( at least to take 75 points of 100 ); 2.  To be succesfull  preparing and defending thesis (60 ECTS)  related to its area to jury.

 

  1. Objectives of the Program

 

  • To introduce the structural characteristics of human cells and tissues to our undergraduate and graduate students (graduate, doctoral and specialist education) in our medical faculties.
  • To convey the classical knowledge of  Histology and Embriyology to new coming Medical Faculty students in best way.
  • To update classical knowledge and renew application preparates,  following the studies such as  newly published textbooks, periodicals, etc.
  • To arrange the technical  laboratories   in a way to closely follow studies performed about the topics of cell culture, electron microscopy,immunohistochemistry etc.
  • • Our main mission is to carry out international scientific studies in the field of histology and embryology and to contribute to the development of new histological techniques.
  1. Program Competencies (Learning Outcomes)

 

 

  1. To have enough and detailed information related to cell structure and function in microscopic level.

 

  1. To recognize and evaluate tissue types in human body and histologic features of these tissues.

  

  1. To know enough information about general features of human embryology.

  

  1. To describe and evaluate the microscopic structure and organization of organs of body systems

  

  1. To have enough knowledge about laboratory methods used in fertilization and assisted reproduction.

 

  1. To know and apply microscope types, structure, its working principles, usage areas and application methods.

  

  1. To prepare tissue for light microscope. To know and apply all steps to prepare samples to examine in light microscope.
  2. To know and apply all steps to prepare samples to examine in electron microscope
  3. To make a presentation  by using presentation techniques.
  4. Plan, execute, finalize and write research projects related to the field.

  

 

  1. Occupational Profiles of Graduates

 

Graduates of this program can work as embryologists in assistive technology centers in the public and private sectors after receiving the required certification program trainings. In addition, they may be employed if they meet the requirements of the universities which are affiliated to the Higher Education Institution and need a faculty member..

 

  1. Access to Further Studies

Candidates who have successfully completed their M.Sc. degree can receive education as long as they obtain a valid score in the relevant field of Academic Personnel and Postgraduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES), and have the English language document at an adequate level (YDS, YOKDIL, KPDS, UDS, TOEFL etc. which are the language exams accepted by the Universities Board).

  1. Department/Programme Facilities

Our department has 1 professor, 1 assistant professor, 5 research assistants, 1 laboratory technician. In our light microscope laboratories, we have automatic tissue-processing machine for  tissue processing,staining and sectioning,   automatic staining machine,    semi-automic microtone,     cryostat,  fluorescence microscope, digital camera and morhometric analysis programme, incubator used for cell culture studies, laminar flow, inverted microscope attached with manipulator used for experimental in vitro fertilization applications.
